I live in Michigan and it does not get warm enough to set plants out until late May or June when the danger of frost is past. I like to have flowers and find that flats of flowers are getting expensive and they are not flats with twelve plants like years ago but now eight or maybe six. This year I saved lots of plastic containers that I got cookies in or lettuce and yes even my cat litter containers. I thought they would make good little green houses. Below are some pictures with my containers and as you can see the seeds are starting to sprout and I have little green plants.
Look little plants have started
The picture above is the cat litter container and I cut a flap in it and put the peat pots in there and closed in with masking tape. Later when they are big enough I can remove them.
I let then sit on the deck in the sun and make sure they are sealed. Now and then I take the lids off and shake off some of the excess moisture.
I know it looks strange and if they don't all make it I am not out a lot of money . Most of the seeds I saved from the previous summer.
LET'S HOPE I HAVE A GREEN THUMB
Hey, your "green"! More ways than one! Frugal is a word everyone is using now. I hope they all come up for you!

Wow Elaine, what a great idea. I agree buying all the flowers you love to have has gotten so expensive. It is too late for me to do that now, maybe not, if I get right on it. Thanks for sharing. Blessings

I know what you mean about the prices of flowers and plants on the increase. I spent over $75. on plants the other day and still didn't get enough!
ReplyDeleteYou are smart to do yours with seeds. I hope they all spring forth to full loveliness!

Very good idea! Right now I have seeds started sitting on the guest bed with southern window exposure. I have 11 tomato varieties plus brussels sprouts and broccoli.

What a great idea...We can't put a lot of things out here till in June. My Son bought a little walk in green house to use this season but it keeps blowing over even though it was staked down. We are going to put weights on the corners today and see if that helps!
ReplyDeleteI love that you saved your own seeds too. You are an Awesome Earth Mama!
